Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) or dimethyl sulfone

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) or dimethyl sulfone

COSMETIKWATCH® has just listed products from the Australian brand Woohoo Body and is focusing on this "natural" ingredient (with its strange name), which is rarely found in products on the market.

What is MSM?
This organic sulphur compound comes from the oxidation of a wood pulp by-product. Although it is derived from a natural raw material, its manufacture involves a chemical process. Popular in the world of food supplements, it is often recommended for joint pain.

Advantages of MSM in cosmetics:
MSM is known for its organic sulphur content, which is essential for the production of collagen, keratin and many other proteins needed for healthy skin, hair and nails.
By releasing sulphur, it helps to purify acne-prone skin and combat skin ageing by promoting collagen synthesis.

I was familiar with the use of sulphur in cosmetics in the form of colloidal sulphur, mainly for its anti-acne action, but not at all with MSM...
It can also be found under the INCI name: dimethyl sulfone. I found nail care and anti-acne treatment formulas containing this ingredient in the COSMETIKWATCH® database.
