Many cosmetic formulas use this ingredient, known for its combination of antimicrobial efficacy and antioxidant properties. In intelligent combination with organic acids or co-preservatives, it can be used for broad-spectrum product protection.

So we did some research in the COSMETIKWATCH® database, selecting its INCI name in the "include this ingredient" search field:

  • It is mostly used in face care products,
  • It is also found in many suncare formulas,
  • On the other hand, it is rarely used in hair care, hygiene or make-up products.

Some minimalist formulas, such as those by Typology or HARVEST10, use it as the only preservative, in association with pentylene glycol.

What is O-CYMEN-5-OL?

It's a substituted phenolic compound in the form of a colorless, odorless crystalline solid. It is light-stable and sparingly soluble in water.

  • Inspired by nature, it's an isomer of thymol (a compound found in Thyme essential oil) but obtained synthetically,
  • It's one of the last preservatives listed that doesn't get a bad press,
  • It also prevents acne and prevents it from worsening,
  • In terms of tolerance, it is gentle and non-irritating to the skin.
  • European cosmetics regulations authorize it at a maximum concentration of 0.1%.
